Introduction

The Code of Practice is developed by the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland (BPEQ) to provide guidance to RPEQs as to appropriate professional conduct or practice.

The Professional Engineers Act 2002 (PE Act) and accompanying regulations sets out BPEQ’s functions and the statutory requirements relating to the practise of professional engineering in or for Queensland. The PE Act also sets out the requirement for a Code of Practice.   The Board must review the Code of Practice at least once every three years.

All current RPEQs are subject to the Code of Practice. Pursuant with s112 of the PE Act, the Code of Practice may be used as evidence in any disciplinary proceedings brought by BPEQ against a RPEQ, as evidence of appropriate professional conduct or practice.

The Board has commenced a review of the Code of Practice and is seeking feedback.

The consultation period is now open and will close on Wednesday 27 March 2024.

Background

The current Code of Practice went into effect on 29 October 2021 and can be found here.

The purpose of the Code of Practice is to:

• promote the obligations which underpin professional engineering services
• provide a set of guidelines and principles to inform RPEQs on appropriate standards of professional conduct or practice
• affirm the accountability of the engineering profession to the public in Queensland and
• promote public confidence in professional engineering services provided by RPEQs and undertaking work in or for Queensland.

The Code of Practice is divided into three sections:

1. Professional Conduct
2. Personal Conduct
3. Professional Expertise

Each section consists of principles that underpin expectations of RPEQs performing professional engineering services in or for Queensland.
