Restoration of registration

The registration period

RPEQ registration is valid for a period of no more than 12 months, from July 1 to June 30. All RPEQs are required to renew their registration during the annual renewal period, which runs from 1 April to 31 May. RPEQs who do not renew their registration during the renewal period have their registration lapsed.

BPEQ reminds RPEQs about renewing their RPEQ registration by sending notices through post and email, in BPEQ’s newsletter, the Pulse and via BPEQ's social media account on LinkedIn

Why registration is important

If an engineer’s registration has lapsed, they are not legally entitled to carry out professional engineering services in or for Queensland unless a RPEQ directly supervises them.

It is an offence under the Professional Engineers Act 2002 (PE Act) to carry out professional engineering services if you are not a RPEQ or not directly supervised by a RPEQ.

It is also an offence under the PE Act to use the title ‘registered professional engineer’, ‘registered professional engineer of Queensland’ or ‘RPEQ’ if an engineer is not registered at the time that they use that title. Even an inadvertent use of the title (for instance, after forgetting to renew the RPEQ registration) could be considered an offence under the PE Act.

BPEQ takes the use of the legally protected title ‘RPEQ’ (or similar terms) seriously. It is legally and professionally incumbent on individuals to ensure they are registered whenever they use a protected title. Engineers whose registration has lapsed must apply to have it restored.

The restoration period and process

The restoration period is from 1 July to 31 August in the calendar year of the registration expiry.

Engineers seeking to restore their registration during this period can simply log in to their My RPEQ account and restore their registration through the portal.

Applications made outside two months of expiry (i.e. after 31 August of the same calendar year as expiry): applications for restoration made outside of two months from the expiry of registration are not accepted as a matter of course and cogent reasons need to be advanced for them to be accepted.

The Board will not accept an application outside of the restoration period unless it is proper to do so. As a guide, the factors the Board may consider include:

However, there are other principles the Board will bear in mind when deciding whether to accept an application. They include a consideration of:
